In 2021, our team completed PC2 electrical work for the new electron microscope suite for a secure government facility in Geelong
The team was proud to have completed this challenging project, as it is built inside a PC2-rated lab space. The project was contracted to Built and GoTo Electrical Solutions, and their sub-contractors from the Fire Detection Specialists (FDS), Chubb, and Skey Enterprises Pty Ltd.
All were tasked to complete the light, power, controls, fire installation, security, and data cabling in the new PC2 Non-secure Electron Microscope Suite (NSEM).
The supply and installation of distribution boards were not the usual setup as there was a requirement to have a direct connected chassis, a load staged chassis and a UPS chassis. In addition to this, a 35KVA Eaton UPS was supplied, installed and commissioned onsite. The load staged section of the board used some site-specific controls to ensure that if the onsite system goes down, it will power back up on generator supply in stages.
Being a PC2-rated lab space, special light fittings were required to be installed and sealed to the ceiling. Most of the power and data were required to be installed on a metal ECD skirting duct. There were 3 fume hoods to power multiple different supplies including normal supply, controls and UPS supply.
Included in the controls section of the electrical contract was an eye wash station alarm with a link back to the main site alarm monitoring system with testing ability, and an emergency power off (EPO) system that can shut down the power to all outlets in the lab space and linked back into the lab gas supplies to shut them down as well.
In addition to the contract with Built, GoTo Electrical Solutions was contracted to Sage Automation to assist with the wiring and installation of all the equipment and devices required for the automation of the air handling system required to deliver fresh air in and out of the lab space.
